A little cool yet, but Spring has definitely arrive in North Dakota! The 2016 Unit Directory was mailed to everyone last week – a big THANK YOU to Ryan J. for the beautiful cover photo this year! Don’t forget to get your registrations sent in for the Monument of Peace Dedication Rally and the Region 7 Tall Ships Rally. The Region 7 Rally registration deadline is June 1 and you must make your own campsite reservations with the campground. See the directory for details, contacts, registration forms and phone numbers for both rallies! You will also note that the New Member Application is a new form this year. Please use the calling cards included in the directory to promote our unit activities and membership.

Great News! We just confirmed one of our activities for the Spring Campout at Art Idso’s place in Absaraka the weekend of May 5 – 8. We will be treated to a private tour the 35-acre Dale E. Herman Research Arboretum just outside Absaraka! Dr. Todd West, NDSU Horticulture Undergraduate Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Woody Plant Improvement confirmed our tour. We will learn more about woody landscape plants they are trialing in our climate conditions, plant diseases and small fruit research. This will be a great opportunity to pull off the winter mittens and get some much needed sunshine on those pale green thumbs! The tour is scheduled for Friday at 1:30 PM (weather permitting), with an alternate morning time frame, too. It’s early spring – just in case, bring your waterproof shoes or boots. See you there!

I am proud to advise that 100% of the funding required to complete the Monument of Peace has been obtained at the IBT Meeting in Rayne, Louisiana. This is through two generous donations of $5,000.00 each by Region Officers. Fundraising will continue and donations will still be collected for a fund to maintain the monument. Now the celebration begins !! Gail Harrower, chair International Peace Garden Monument Committee

As I sit here, the temperature is struggling to get to the positive side of Brrrrr, and thoughts are turning to Spring. Already the days are getting longer – there is a sliver of setting sun on the horizon at quitting time and it’s not a totally dark commute home. The January-February issue of our Prairie Rose newsletter has been posted.
In it, you will read about some very hardy Snowbirds who found their niche volunteering in British Columbia this winter in their Airstream! Also an article dreaming away the winter and getting their rigs ready for the upcoming camping season. Plans are well underway for this summer’s dedication of the Monument of Peace at the International Peace Gardens on July 24th. Check the Calendar of Events in the newsletter – to view or download, click Prairie Rose Newsletter – Jan-Feb 2016

Artist Art Norby accompanied his Monument of Peace sculptured to the International Peace Gardens north of Dunseith on Monday August 17. WBCCI’s North Dakota Peace Garden Unit set out on a multi-year fund raising effort to replace a sculpture that disintegrated in the elements that was donated by WBCCI in 1973. Just under $20,000 remains to be raised, so it is good to be able to see the results of the generous donations that have come in so far. We are not done yet – for the addresses where to send your donation, please use the Monument of Peace Donation Form .

Have you seen the Monument of Peace article in the July issue of North Dakota Living magazine? Kudos to Vern and Bev Zink for their tireless efforts in getting the word out. Just so you know, the Monument is finished, sitting outside the artist’s studio in Minnesota for all to admire, waiting for our final payment. Following the International Rally, there is only $21,000 left to raise in order to bring the Monument home to the International Peace Gardens. Remember, your contributions are tax deductible as allowable under Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)3. For a photo of the Monument as it was getting its final polish, see our status page

The July-August issue of the Prairie Rose Newsletter is hot off the press – just click the link to view or download. This issue is packed with information on the activities and rallies yet to come this summer including the Region 7 Rally in the Wisconsin Dells, and the Buddy Rally at “Absaraka Art’s Place”, plus a recap of the Fort Sisseton Rally in June.
Make sure you read the update on the Monument of Peace – the sculpture is finished and the parts are coming together, but more donations are needed before we can take the Monument to its home. This Monument will be all the more important, as in recent news, it was announced that due to decaying and unsafe structure, the Peace Towers at the International Peace Gardens will be torn down soon.
