Folklorama 2009! Region 7 Rally site chosen

Alrighty then!  Region 7 President Don Rogers announced today that the 2009 Region 7 Rally will be held in Winnipeg August 4 – 9th, in conjunction with the city’s Folklorama Folk Arts Festival.  We had a great time there in 2004 and this one will be even better.  We will be staying at the Travelers’ RV Resort on the city’s southeast corner, with full hookups.  It is also expected that there will be two evenings with motorcoach service to the various pavilions, as well as daytime activities to keep us busy.  Start saving your morning coffee money now, because this rally is worth every penny!  As was the case last time, a number of people chose to stay on for the second week of the festival, and this will also be available.  More details will be forthcoming in the winter months.

Greetings from Thunder Bay!

The Region 7 Rally is near over already and I’ve finally gotten onto the web, thanks to someone else’s computer.  Well, that’s not entirely true, because we have been so busy and having a great time, tracking down WiFi and sitting at a computer seems like a lessor priority.

Mission accomplished at the Panorama Amethyst Mine.  I got my “Purple, Sparkly, and Big”.   And made a surprising contribution to the local economy with the GST and PST taxes.  The weather has been absolutely beautiful.  There are 40 units here, from Manitoba, Ontario, North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, and Washington state.  Today, we drove out to Kakabeka Falls for a leisurely walk around the falls.  Yesterday, we caravaned to Fort William Historic Site., and went to an open air concert down at the the Harbor front.  The Symphony was playing Big Band when we arrived, following with a Pipes & Drums Corp, with Tanglefoot entertaining third and closing the evening.  Tonight, there is a dinner at the Polish Legion and it is rumored we will be eating very well.  Wisconsin unit is getting geared up for their hosting of next year’s International Rally in Madison.  More details to follow.  CR

July 2nd in Bozeman

The day was pretty laid back.  We met our good friends, the Carlsens from Regina, Saskatchewan; a fried of theirs is planning an official caravan to the 2009 International Rally in Madison and wanted some inputs on what might be interesting places to visit along their route.  We met with the South Dakota Unit at the John Bozeman Bistro in Bozeman’s historic downtown for their luncheon.  President John and Bobbi Tetzlaff and their granddaughters hosted the luncheon.  Attending were Myrtle and Don Bell from Texas, R7 2VP Joan and Mike Lahr from Wisconsin Past R7 First Lady Annette Hooker.  The food was a little pricy, but it was very good and I wasn’t able to eat it all, which says volumns, as many of you know.

In the afternoon, we took a drive up into the mountains south of here, to Hayalite Reservoir.  The mountain streams feeding this dammed lake are still running high and the level is putting water over the spillway.  Nice and cool up there, where we did get to points over 7,000 feet.  It must be a very popular location so close to Bozeman, as you were never very far from someone.

Last night, the evening’s entertainment was the Ringling Five singers, a group of eight local ranchers who sing cowboy songs. We saw this group at the Host Fest and they were promoting this October’s events.

We are hitching up this moring and pulling out.  Temperature for the 4th of July in Bozeman are forecast to be in the upper 90’s.  We don’t have air here.  Time to giddyup and move along.
