It’s coming up fast!  I check with the park and they still have two sites remaining, so if you think you might be coming and haven’t made any reservations yet, I will be releasing those sites on Sept. 8th.  For Reservations at General Sibley Park, phone 701-222-1844, and be sure to mention the “Ruebel Airstream group”.

Greetings from Thunder Bay!

The Region 7 Rally is near over already and I’ve finally gotten onto the web, thanks to someone else’s computer.  Well, that’s not entirely true, because we have been so busy and having a great time, tracking down WiFi and sitting at a computer seems like a lessor priority.

Mission accomplished at the Panorama Amethyst Mine.  I got my “Purple, Sparkly, and Big”.   And made a surprising contribution to the local economy with the GST and PST taxes.  The weather has been absolutely beautiful.  There are 40 units here, from Manitoba, Ontario, North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, and Washington state.  Today, we drove out to Kakabeka Falls for a leisurely walk around the falls.  Yesterday, we caravaned to Fort William Historic Site., and went to an open air concert down at the the Harbor front.  The Symphony was playing Big Band when we arrived, following with a Pipes & Drums Corp, with Tanglefoot entertaining third and closing the evening.  Tonight, there is a dinner at the Polish Legion and it is rumored we will be eating very well.  Wisconsin unit is getting geared up for their hosting of next year’s International Rally in Madison.  More details to follow.  CR

July 2nd in Bozeman

The day was pretty laid back.  We met our good friends, the Carlsens from Regina, Saskatchewan; a fried of theirs is planning an official caravan to the 2009 International Rally in Madison and wanted some inputs on what might be interesting places to visit along their route.  We met with the South Dakota Unit at the John Bozeman Bistro in Bozeman’s historic downtown for their luncheon.  President John and Bobbi Tetzlaff and their granddaughters hosted the luncheon.  Attending were Myrtle and Don Bell from Texas, R7 2VP Joan and Mike Lahr from Wisconsin Past R7 First Lady Annette Hooker.  The food was a little pricy, but it was very good and I wasn’t able to eat it all, which says volumns, as many of you know.

In the afternoon, we took a drive up into the mountains south of here, to Hayalite Reservoir.  The mountain streams feeding this dammed lake are still running high and the level is putting water over the spillway.  Nice and cool up there, where we did get to points over 7,000 feet.  It must be a very popular location so close to Bozeman, as you were never very far from someone.

Last night, the evening’s entertainment was the Ringling Five singers, a group of eight local ranchers who sing cowboy songs. We saw this group at the Host Fest and they were promoting this October’s events.

We are hitching up this moring and pulling out.  Temperature for the 4th of July in Bozeman are forecast to be in the upper 90’s.  We don’t have air here.  Time to giddyup and move along.

Unit Publications Contest Results

Just retrieved our unit directory and newsletter from the Unit Publications Contest.  North Dakota will bring home the Best in Show trophy for our newsletter, the Prairie Rose.  At first I could not find our directory, but then found it in an envelope under the newsletters.  Our directory had a little note attached to it that read “Sorry this was misplaced & not judged”.  Wisconsin’s excellent directory had the same little note on it, too.

Happy Canada Day! Bozeman – July 1

We were invited to celebrate Canada Day with the Canadian delegation for breakfast this morning.  It was just a sea of red and white attire under the Montana State University stadium bleachers, it appears everyone got the memo.  Check your schedules for Labor Day weekend – If you don’t already have plans, the Hands Across the Border Rally hosted by the Montana and Alberta-Saskatchewan units is being held this year in Havre, MT.  We had a GREAT time several years ago at Estevan.

Today the weather is supposed to be a little cooler, but chance of severe thunderstorms later on – it got up to 94 degrees yesterday.  Might have to take a drive up into the mountains later on, now that the serious business of the rally is done for us, anyway.  And we haven’t done any shopping yet – need to pencil that in, too.  Wait, I take that back – we’ve made two visits now to the Airstream store, so that counts.

Yeaaaaaa! They’re here!  It’s garbage pick up day today- It’s been quite warm here, you know, and we are the trailer closest to, and immediately downwind to the dumpster.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – Bozeman June 29th

The Good:  The ambulance call mentioned in my last post reportedly was for a fainting due to wrong meds and the person is OK.  Region 7 Luncheon was well attended and yummy food.  I was good to see many people we hadn’t in a loong time.  Also, Thomsons no longer have their 34 foot Classic, as they traded it in last month for a 2008 30 foot Classic.  If all goes to plan, the Thomsons will have Show & Tell at the Stump Lake Rally at the end of July.

The Bad:  As typical at the International Rallies, we are being treated to unseasonably high temperatures.  As we are in the 3 amp section, we were cooked out of our trailer yesterday afternoon and went for a drive around the valley to stay cooled.  The main rally site has no A/C.  But on the bright side, when the sun sinks to the horizon, the mercury falls in the thermometer quite rapidly, making it quite nice for sleeping, even when parked on the asphalt.

The Ugly:  Someone wrote an unwelcome note about North Dakota on our bulletin board message pad.  Finding no humor in the comment, I remove it.  Goes to show there are bad apples in every basket.

Day’s End – June 27th, 51st Int’l Rally at Bozeman

Lots and lost of Airstreams!  Watched the Vintage Parade roll into Silver City  this morning – it was hard to pick a favorite, but the ’36 Caddy pulling the highly polished 50’s model trailer got my vote.  Saw the Carlsens from Regina in the parade.  The Tetzlaffs are two trailers away from us, here in Green 2.  Got the bulletin board in place to prove out unit was represented here.  Signed up for the Region 7 luncheon, picked up the paperwork for the delegates meeting and the unit publications contests.  Larry went shopping at the Airstream Store – his spare parts inventory has been replenished.  It’s cooling off quite nicely; it was in the upper 70’s today and most likely the furnace might have to be turned on sometime during the night.  There’s still snow to be seen on the mountain tops, and the Yellowstone River is still flooding.  Hey – you know that water pours into the Missouri and helps the level on Lake Sakakawea.   To answer the question everyone is wondering, when we checked in, they said there were about 650 registered units here as of last night.

Friday June 27 – Sunrise in the Bullpen

The sun must have just cleared the mountains to the east of Bozeman, as there is a wicked gleam off a little, highly polished vintage Airstream here in the Bullpen at the 51st International Rally on the campus of Montana  State University.  And my camera is out in the pickup!  The 30’s model caddy just pulled up alongside his shiny vintage, too.  Looks like he went for a qick heavy duty coffee and a sprucing up at the local car wash – there’s some serious polishing going on over there..  The Vintage Parade is this morning, though we will likely miss it, as we were told to be ready to move out of the Bullpen by 8am.  The  sun’s relection is getting pretty strong now on that polished aluminum.  It looks like it’s going to be a BEAUTIFUL day here.  Bulletin Board is ready to go and we are looking forward to getting checked in.  Check back here daily, as I will try to update this to keep you informed of all the happenings and gossip at this 51st International Rally in Big Sky Country!
